The Nigeria Women’s Basketball Team amassed 40 minutes of efficient offense and pesky defense in its final group game against Algeria and in the process recorded its second largest margin of victory of the 2015 Women Afrobasket posting a 79-49 win on Tuesday at City Arena in Yaoundé, Cameroun.
Every player scored for D’Tigress, led by 15 points and 7 steals from Adaora Elonu, who shot 7-of-12 from the field. Nkechi Akashili (Pictured) also contributed 15 points; Helen Ogunjimi added 11; and Elo Edeferioka joined Priscilla Udeaja with 10 rebounds each.
Advancing as Group B’s No. 2 seed, Nigeria will face Group A’s No. 3 finisher for a place in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The game was only a contest for the first 2 quarters when Nigeria held a 30-21 lead going into the half. Sprinting on to a 19-4 lead eight minutes into the third period, D’Tigress held their Algerian counterpart to just eight third quarter points. The final quarter was a closer affair however; the damage was already done as Nigeria closed out the game easily.
While Algeria was held to just 32.3 percent shooting from the field, including 5-of-19 from 3-point, D’Tigers outscored Algeria in the paint 25-16 and won the battle on the boards 57-32.
