Atonye Nyingifa is a 5’11 forward who is finally having a breakout year at UCLA after spending the last two seasons recovering from two ACL injuries. The California native who is born to Nigerian parents is averaging 11.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game as UCLA lies in third place in Pac-12 action with a 10-2 record. Nyingifa was named the student-athlete of the week during the month of January after some stellar displays, and as UCLA continue to aim for the number one spot, they must hope that Nyinifa remains healthy to give them a better chance of contending for the Conference title.
“You have to have strength of the mind, of the heart and of the body. So she’s developed a really high amount of strength even though it might not be in the manner in which she would of chosen,” Close said of Nyingifa’s recovery.
