Festus Ezeli continues to improve defensively, getting a career high 5 blocks in the Golden State Warriors 101-83 win during the week over the Boston Celtics. The Warriors finish the month of December with a 12-4 record, the team’s best month of December in a long while.

 

Italy

In the final round of the year, the top performer in Italy came from Gani Lawal. The 6’9 forward overcame early foul trouble to score 13 points and grab 8 boards as Virtus Roma, won a hard fought battle, coming from behind to win 86-82 over Enel Brindisi.

France

Cholet returned to winning ways in the French league on the back of 14 points by Nigerian International Derrick Obasohan. They beat Roanne 79-60 after picking up the defensive intensity in the 2nd half, rallying from a 31-38 first half deficit to win the game, highlights from the game and an Interview with Obasohan is below. Elsewhere,  Uche Nsonwu-Amadi contributed 10 points and 8 rebounds as ASVEL demolished Linoges 79-56.

 

Estonia

Boxing day saw Ike Okoye go 12/17 from the field to finish with 30 points and 14 rebounds in the 75-93 loss to Parnu.  Kalev remains second from bottom with Okoye averaging 14.8 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in the Estonian league.

Turkey

Chinemelu Elonu 21 points and 12 rebounds were not enough for Tofas as they went down 71-94 to Anadolu Efes.

Ukraine

Despite 19 points and 7 rebounds from Aleksey Adeniran, his side Mykolaiv were unable to get past Dniproazot, losing the contest 77-92.

Sweden

Top performance came from Urule Ighavboa, the 6’8 power forward had 18 points and 7 rebounds, but his team LF Basket would lose 91-106 to Boras.

China

Josh Akognon kept his place at the top of the scoring charts in China over the week with 30. 9 points per game. His best effort was a 33 points and 8 rebounds effort in the 106-110 loss to Fujian Quanzhou Bank. Elsewhere, Ike Diogu’s best effort was a 19 points, 7 rebounds game as Guandong Southern Tigers lost 100-110 to Beijing Ducks.

NBDL

Former Syracuse standout Arinze Onuaku’s best performance was an 18 points and career high 17 rebounds as Canton Charge defeated Tulsa 66ers 104 – 96. Onuaku is currently averaging 14.3 points per game together with 11.5 rebounds, he currently leads the D-League in double doubles this season with 7 and ranks 2nd in rebounding. His Team-mate Michael Eric best stat was a 10 points and 10 rebounds effort in 98-107 loss to Austin Toros. Elsewhere, 6’3 guard Ben Uzoh had 18 points and 7 assist in Springfield Armour’s loss to Santa Cruz Warriors. And finally, Chamberlain Oguchi is finally getting into the form that saw him earn to workouts with NBA teams during preseason. The 6’6 guard had two 16 points efforts, first in Maine Red Claws 108-94 win over Idaho Stampede on Boxing day, then another in the 106-94 win over over Sioux Falls Skyforce two days later.

NBA

Festus Ezeli’s best effort was a 6 points and 9 rebounds effort in the win over the Charlotte Bobcats in midweek. Ezeli continues to cover the injured Andrew Bogut, and has proved that he can hold his own defensively so far as the Warriors continue their impressive season campaign.

NBDL

Canton Charge’s Arinze Onuaku’s best effort over the past week was a 19 points and 9 rebounds effort in the win against Fort Wayne Mad Ants. In the same game, Michael Eric finished with 11 points and 6 rebounds. Elsewhere, Springfield Armour’s Ben Uzoh’s best performance was an 18 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in the 119-127 loss to Erie Bay Hawks.

China

19/12/12 is a date Josh Akognon would likely not forget anytime soon, that’s because the former Cal State-Fullerton standout hit 8 threes on the way to recording a season best 49 points in the 115-109 win over Zhejiang. It’s very hard to get match reports out of China, but it does not take a genius to know that Akognon dominated and its no surprise that he is currently the league leader in points with 32.2 points per game, you can follow his fan site right here. Elsewhere, Ike Diogu’s best performance was a 26 points 8 rebounds effort in the win over Shanghai Sharks on Tuesday night. his Guangdong side a currently top of the CBL.

Italy

Gani Lawal – Fresh off attending the Italian-All Star game last weekend, 6’9 former Georgia Tech standout Gani Lawal put in his best performance in the Italian league yet as Virtus Roma lost a tight game 81-83 to Sassari. Despite the loss, Lawal who is playing for the first time in Italy, racked up season highs of 34 points and 17 rebounds in the contest. Lawal’s statistic score (+/-) of 57  was the second best ever in the Italian league since records began, he ranks behind Brian Shaw who had a (+/-) stat of 59 on Dec.23 1989. In the game Lawal had 8 dunks beating his own record of 6 he had earlier this season. Gani Lawal is averaging 13.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

Jeleel Akindele – Despite a double double from Nigerian International Jeleel Akindele, Juve Caserta were not able to get the win, going down 77-83 to Venezia in overtime. Akindele start brightly scoring 8 points in the first quarter, but later cooled off and finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds in the contest.

Spain

Despite a strong performance by Nigerian International Ekene Ibekwe, his side Lagun Aro would lose 71-85 to current league leaders Real Madrid who are undefeated in 14 games. In a colorful affair, Ibekwe acquitted himself very well, impressing on both ends of the court with, timely blocks, big rebounds and a couple of highlight dunks. His side would come close in the third 63-72, but they were unable to match up with the more experienced Madrid side. Ibekwe finished the game 5/6 from the floor to collect 11 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks, they remain in the bottom teams in the table.

Turkey

Alade Aminu’s strong presence inside was unable to get Pinat Karsiyaka the much needed win against Anadolu Efes. Karsiyaka lead for much of the early period even ending the half 34-29 untop, but were unable to close out the game, giving Efes the confidence to take control of the tie and eventually seal it. Throughout the game, Aminu’s movement on offence was causing Efes a lot of problems, he was working the pick and roll to great effect, leading to easy finishes around the basket, and on defence, his blocks and rebounds were keeping Karsiyaka ahead. The fourth quarter saw Efes take the lead behind some strong shooting by former Lakers guard Sascha Vujacic, a couple of back and forth threes, saw Karsiyaka down 56-59 5 mins left, and they were unable to recover after that, eventually going down 65-71. Aminu finished with 20 points and 6 rebounds in the game.

France

A 15-0 run in the first quarter saw ASVEL get back to winning ways with an 85-59 rout of Nancy. Veteran Nigerian International Uche Nsonwu-Amadi, put in a comfortable 12 points and 7 rebounds effort in the win that sees them rise to 5th in the league to get back amongst the lead leaders.

Great Britain

Michael Ojo went 5/8 from three point land to finish with a season high 34 points as Plymouth Raiders routed bottom side Mersey Tigers 103-65. The Tigers had started the brighter side, but back to back threes by Ojo fueled a 12-0 run by the Raiders, another three by Ojo who had 27 points by half time, ignited another run which the Tigers were unable to comeback from. Elsewhere, Michael Owumi finished with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists, as Worcester Wolves defeated Glasgow Rocks 83-70.

Russia

Nigerian International Mike Efevberha finished with 11 points and 6 rebounds in Spartak Primorie’s 60-77 loss to Spartak SP.

Ukraine

Aleksey Adediran was 6/8 from the floor, finishing with 12 points as Mykolaiv overcame Dnipro to win 76-71. Elsewhere, Callistus Eziukwu finished with 14 points as Krybasbasket lost to Hoverla 74-85.

Mexico

Ike Ofoegbu dropped 28 points as Toros won their 8 straight game to stay in second place 3 games behind leaders Xalapa.

Sweden

Urule Igbavboa’s 16 points and 12 rebounds was not enough as LF Basket fell to Sundsvall 93-102.

Poland

Yemi Nicholson scored 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in Energa Czarni’s 94-104 loss to Turow.

China

Ike Diogu continues to put in impressive displays for his Chinese team Guandong ST, his best performance during the week was a 21 points and 14 rebounds effort in a 104-103 victory over Fujian. Diogu is currently averaging 16.5 points and 12.3 rebounds per game, and his team is currently in 2nd place in the Chinese league. Elsewhere, Josh Akognon is setting the Chinese league alight with his offence. Akognon best performance last week was a 33 points effort in a 107-105 win over Jiangsu.

NBDL

6’9 former Syracuse standout Arinze Onuaku’s top performance was a 20 points and 15 rebounds effort in a win over Iowa Energy on Saturday night. Another player that is doing well in the D-League is former New Jersey Nets point guard Ben Uzoh. The 6’3 guard’s best effort was a 14 point performance in a loss to Iowa Energy on Friday night.

Turkey

Pinar Karsiyaka won their third straight, moving to third in the Turkish top flight after defeating Antalya 88-74. Down 45-47 in the half, Karsiyaka stepped up their defensive stance, and where effective from long range range, eventually taking the lead and finishing the game 88-74 untop. Alade Aminu finished the game with 19 points.

France

The best effort from a Nigerian came during the midweek Euro Cup with Derrick Obasohan scoring 19 points in the 68-76 defeat to Russian side Spartak SP in group G. With the defeat, Cholet failed to advance to the last 16 of the competition as they needed a win to qualify  Cholet had initially started the third quarter ahead 57-55, but a 11-0 run by Spartak SP proved their downfall at the end. Elsewhere,  during league action, a 14 point performance by Uche Nsonwu-Amadi could not help ASVEL as they went down to Roanne 61-67.

Ukraine

A fourth quarter burst by Mykolaiv saw them defeat BC Kiev 76-63. Aleksey Adeniran came up big with 16 points and 7 rebounds.

Romania

Temi Adebayo continued his good form of late by registering 15 points and grabbing 6 rebounds as Targu Mures defeated Dinamo Bucuresti 87-66. Mures are now up to 4th place in the rankings.

Poland

Yemi Nicholson’s 23 points and 12 rebounds was not enough for Energa Czarni as they lost at home to Stelmet ZG 89-98.

Sweden

Despite Oladapo Ayuba’s 18 points last night, Norkopping were not able to match up well against Boras, going down 85-99.

Mexico

Ike Ofoegbu currently leads Toros in scoring with 17 points per game. In an effort to get Toros back into title contention, the 6’9 forward best performance was an 18 points and 8 rebounds effort in an 83-79 win over Panteras. Toros currently lie third in the league, three games off the leaders.

Great Britain

Former Clemson standout  Olu Babalola finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds as Sheffield Sharks caused an upset with a 83-74 win over the Glasgow Rocks. Elsewhere, despite a low scoring performance by Michael Ojo, he was still able to deliver 12 points as Plymouth Raiders defeated Leicester Riders 86-82.

Norway

Roy Nwachukwu finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds as Ammerud Basket defeated Baerum Basket 87-77.

France

Uche Nsonwu-Amadi put in an inspiring performance on his way to being named the most valuable player, as ASVEL finally overcame Dijon in the fourth quarter after some initial resistance to win 78-65. ASVEL had come into this game on the back of two defeats, so this win was much needed and it moves them back up to third position in the league. Nsonwu-Amadi finished with an impressive 20 points and 8 rebounds in the contest.

Italy

Ebi Ere

Ebi Ere put up the best performance in Italy with a 16 points and 9 rebounds effort as Cimberio Varese got back to winning ways to maintain their position at the top of the Italian table. A second quarter offensive blitz by Varese was too much for Sutor Montegranaro to handle, as they went down 106-88.

Estonia

Ike Okoye

6’9 power forward Ike Okoye now has back to back wins to celebrate this season. The former Boise State standout has been impressive ever since he joined Estonian side Tallina Kalev, but his team did not get the necessary wins to back up his performance. In the two games played over the week, Tallina Kalev scored impressive wins over 5th placed Rapla 73-65, then topped that a couple of days later when they defeated Hito/Johvi 89-72. Over the two games, Okoye averaged and impressive 16 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. Kalev must now aim to build upon these victories in a bid to turn their season around. Their next game will be against Sakalai in the Baltic league next week Friday.

Ukraine

Aleksey Adediran

Aleksey Adediran was very impressive for Mykolaiv in the 88-80 win against Halychyna. The 6’9 centre scored 19 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in an entertaining game that saw seven lead changes down the stretch, Adediran proved very effective on the offence, taken advantage of the tiring opponent. Elsewhere, Callistus Eziukwu scored 8 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as  Kryvbasbasket defeated Odessa 74-52.

Turkey

Chinemelu Elonu put up a strong 15 points and 9 rebounds performance as Tofas got back to winning ways defeating bottom side Hacettepe 87-79 in the Turkish premier division. A 15-0 run in the first quarter already set the tone for the rest of the match, and Tofas did not look back as they held on for the victory.

Spain

Despite a strong 14 points and 6 rebounds effort by Ekene Ibekwe, Lagun Aro failed again to record a win in the league losing to Gran Canaria 72-94. The defeat sends them to the bottom of the table after managing only one win in ten games.

Poland

Yemi Nicholson came of the bench to give Energa Czarni a spark as they overcame Kotwica 80-76. Czarni had started well, but they let unfancied Kotwica get back into the game with some sloppy plays down the stretch. They managed to hold out on the back of Nicholson’s 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Romania

Temi Adebayo

7’0 centre Temi Adebayo is finally finding his form in the Romanian league. A week after posting a career high 11 points, the former Dodan Warriors alumni went 7/7 from the floor on his way to 15 points as Targu Mures defeated Pitesti 78-64.

Latvia

In the first of two games, the midweek action saw Folarin Campbell come off the bench to score 10 points and grab 5 rebounds as Ventspils defeated Pyrinto 79-59. He followed that up on Sunday by scoring 15 points and grabbing 5 rebounds as Ventspils defeated Latvijas Universitate 88-70 . They are now up to fourth place in the table.

Sweden

In midweek action, Urule Igbavboa had 16 points and 6 rebounds for LF basket, but they could not overcome Uppsala, losing a close game 83-84, they had taken a one point lead with 35 sseconds left in the game, but a jumper by Uppsala’s Johan Jeansson with 10 seconds left restored the one point advatage, LF basket still had a chance to secure the win after a time-out, but where unable to convert on their play . Meanwhile, Oladapo Ayuba’s 12 points and 9 rebounds was not enough for Norkopping as they lost to Sodertalje 62-67.

Great Britain

The highlight performance in the BBL was Michael Ojo’s 31 points against the London Lions, but it was not enough has his Plymouth Raiders side lost the game 91-95. Elsewhere, Alex Owumi finished with 15 points as Worcester Warriors scored and impressive 88-73 win over league leaders Newcastle Eagles who have now dropped to second place.

China

Josh Akognon is still sitting at the top of the scorers chart averaging 33 points per game. Two 26 points performance was his highlight of the week. Meanwhile, Ike Diogu scored 23 points and grabbed 19 rebounds as Guandong defeated Zhejiang 126-124.

Ben Uzoh

Highlights this week included Chamberlain Oguchi scoring 10 points for Main Red Claws in the away win against Erie Bay Hawks. However the most impressive display came from Ben Uzoh who followed up an 18 points 11 rebounds effort earlier in the week to score 30 points against Canton Charge, although his team Springfield Armor would lose. For Canton Charge, Arinze Onuaku had 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Michael Eric had 10 points and 8 rebounds in the win. Uzoh’s performance has seen him earn a call up to workout for the Washington Wizards,

NBA

Al Farouq Aminu’s New Orleans Hornets are currently going through a bad spell after winning one game in their last 10, the one win was a big victory over the Los Angeles Clippers last Tuesday, Aminu finished with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals against his former side. Meanwhile, for the Milwaukee Bucks, Ekpe Udoh’s overall game intelligence saw him claim a starting spot in a win against the Boston Celtics last week. The 6’9 power forward’s impact on defense is making him  a coach’s favorite, and he must continue to work hard to ensure that he stays in the rotation. Finally, Festus Ezeli is averaging 3.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, check out some of his highlights from last week below

The Chinese CBA started last week, and Nigerian International guard, Josh Akognon is already head and shoulders above the competition. In his first game of the season, Akognon put up a 46 points performance in 38 minutes for Liaoning which included 8/13 from three point range. In the three games played so far, Akognon is averaging 35.3 points per game to sit at the top of the scoring table.  As for Ike Diogu, the 6’8 power forward is connecting on over 60% from the field and is averaging 15.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game in Guandong 3-1 start to the season. He scored 20 points in the season opener.

NBDL

Michael Eric and Arinze Onuaku both put in good numbers tgo lead Canton charge to a 90-81 victory over Erie Bayhawks. Onuaku finished with 14 points and 5 rebounds in the game, while Michael Eric came off the bench to score 7 points and grab 14 rebounds.

Italy

In the biggest battle in Italy this weekend, Virtus Roma’s Gani Lawal took on league leaders Ebi Ere’s Cimberio Varese. Varese went into the game unbeaten in 9 games and wanted to make it 10 against the side from Rome. After a dominant start in the first two quarters by Roma where at one stage they where up by 14, they failed to put Varese away who rallied back into the game, led by the hot shooting of Ebi Ere. Varese proceeded to take a 72-70 lead into the final quarter, but this time it was Roma that rallied back into the game, relying on the hot shooting of Luigi Datome and the efficient play by Gani Lawal who went 10/10 from the field, finishing with 23 points and 8 rebounds. Roma went on to win the game 91-87 to put an end to Varese unbeaten run. Ebi Ere finished with 20 points for Varese. Ade Dagunduro did not suit up for Roma because of knee issues. Elsewhere, despite Jeleel Akindele’s fouling out, his side defeated Juve Caserta deafted Cantu in overtime 76-74. Akindele finished the game with an impressive 15 points and 8 rebounds and 5 steals in the game. Elswhere, Benjamin Eze played his first game back from injury, scoring 2 points in 6 minutes as Siena defeated Sidigas Avellino 101 – 65, Ndudi Ebi scored 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds for Avellino.

Spain

Ekene Ibekwe’s Lagun Aro let a 4 points lead slip away in the last 2 minutes of the fourth quarter as they lost to Laboral 69-71.  After various lead changes in the first three quarters that saw some excellent shooting from both sides, Lagun Aro went into the fourth quarter up 57-54. Both sides refused to let their guards down, but Lagun Aro’s failure to exert themselves in the final stretch proved their downfall. Ibekwe played with a lot of energy throughout, and was very active at both ends of the court. He finished with a season high 16 points and 7 rebounds.

France

In the midweek Euro Cup action, Derrick Obasohan scored 19 points as Cholet defeated Croatian side Cibona Zagreb 79-59. Obasohan was 4/6 from range.

Alade Aminu put up some nice performances over the week that resulted in important victories for Pinar Karsiyaka. In the midweek Euro Challenge game against Tofas, Aminu scored 14 points and 7 rebounds as Tofas won comfortably 78-56. He followed that up with an identical 14 points and 9 rebounds against Hacettepe in the Turkish league as Pinar won the game 79-52. Both game highlights are below.

Folarin Campbell helped Ventspils to two victories during the past week. In the Euro Challenge game against Swedish side Norrkoping, Campbell scored 9 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Ventspils won 69-51. He carried that effort into the Baltic league game against Estonian side Rapla, coming off the bench to score 13 points and grabbing 8 rebounds, Ventspils won that game 76-57.

Romania

7’0 centre Temi Adebayo scored 11 points as his side Targu Mures `defeated Napoca 82-72. Adebayo is playing his first season in Europe and is averaging 3.3 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.

Ukraine

Despite 21 points and 10 rebounds by Callistus Eziukwu, Kryvbasbasket lost to top side Budivelnyk 66-82. Elsewhere, Aleksey Adediran scored 13 points as Mykolaiv defeated Odessa 82-75.

Great Britain

The top two Nigerian guards in the BBL went up against each other as Michael Ojo’s Plymouth Raiders went up against Alex Owumi’s Worcester Wolves. It was for Lehigh standout Michael Ojo that got the better of the two guards, finishing the game with 23 points and 5 rebounds as Raiders won the game comfortably 87-65. Alex Owumi had 13 points and 8 rebounds in the contest. Both teams remain in 4th and 5th positions in the league respectively.
